Franco Gozzi, Enzo Ferrari’s longtime press relations chief and all-around confidant, has died in Modena, Italy at the age of 81. Gozzi joined Ferrari in 1960 and continued through the death of his famous boss before finally retiring in 1990. In addition to his press job, Gozzi also spent time as sporting director from 1968 to 1970. Above all, Franco Gozzi understood the often mysterious mind and attitudes of Enzo Ferrari. He knew instinctively when to speak for Ferrari and when to remain silent. Gozzi carefully enlarged the “Ferrari myth” with his own book, published a few years ago: “Memoirs of Enzo Ferrari’s Lieutenant.” But even this entertaining series of stories continued Gozzi’s private role to protect the flame behind the story of Ferrari.
