Every two years there has been a tour in the Rocky Mountains for prewar 8 cylinder Alfa Romeos. The above photo, taken at the Prince of Wales Hotel overlooking Waterton Lake at Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, is by Allan Rosenberg (©Allan Rosenberg – http://www.allanrosenberg.com). These fantastic Tours have been organized by longtime Alfa 8c owner and racer Tom Price from Larkspur, California.
This year 30 “8c Alfas” from both America and Europe participated in the Tour. These iconic machines were built between 1931 and 1939. Many were raced with great success, some seeing continuous serious competition into the early 1950s.
The Tour began at the Coeur d’Alene Resort in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and then crossed into Canada for its first overnight road stop in Cranbrook, British Columbia where we stayed at the luxurious St. Eugene Golf Club and Casino. Here are the cars lined up at the St. Eugene Golf Club.
From Cranbrook, the Tour headed north to Lake Louise, Alberta, stopping at the superb Relais & Château Post Hotel in Lake Louise Village. The accommodations and restaurant at the Post Hotel are without peer. Here are some of the Alfas in the Tour:

After a day exploring Lake Louise while the Alfas had a day of rest, the Tour continued south to Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta where we stayed overnight at the famous Prince of Wales Hotel. Then, after crossing back into the USA, the Tour went over Logan Pass (6640 feet) on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park and continued to the finish with a final overnight stay at the excellent Lodge at Whitefish Lake in Whitefish, Montana.
Close to 1000 miles in 80 year old cars is indeed an adventure! However, the 8c Alfa Romeos are really high performance sports and racing cars with top speeds in excess of 120 mph. These are definitely the premier enthusiasts’ prewar cars, and every bit as exciting today as they were in the 1930s.
