Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Grand Reunion Tour


There have been 250GTO Reunions every five years since 1982. About six years ago there was a small reunion for 250 Testa Rossas in Canada at Circuit Mont Tremblant under the guidance of Lawrence Stroll. Two years ago 250TR owners Ed Davies and Chip Connor, with the assistance of TR owners Lawrence Stroll and John McCaw, decided to create a 250TR Reunion on the scale of those for the GTOs.

With the support of Sandra Button, Chairperson of The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, it was decided to begin this 250TR program with a special class for this model at the 2014 Concours. Of the 31 250TRs originally constructed by Ferrari between 1957 and 1961, 26 exist today (excluding two destroyed cars subsequently “resurrected”) covering a wide range of bodywork styles and mechanical specifications. Of these, 20 250TRs appeared on the lawn at Pebble Beach, without doubt the largest number of these iconic racing cars to appear in one place at one time. It was an exciting and amazing display.

The Grand Reunion Tour which took place after the Concours was sponsored by Bvlgari, Chubb Insurance, Harlan Estate, Michael Kors, G. H. Mumm, Three Sticks Wines and the Oswald Companies. These companies made the Tour both possible and wonderfully enjoyable.

Following the Concours, a total of 14 250TRs gathered at Casa Palmero, which is part of The Lodge at Pebble Beach. This elite group of Testa Rossas included the three 250TRs which had won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1958, 1960 and 1961 and also helped Ferrari win the World Championship for Sports Cars in those years. The Grand Reunion Tour commenced with a welcome dinner on Monday evening at Casa Palmero. The next day, participants in the Tour left Casa Palmero for the first day of driving which took them north on Rt. 1 and then to the east on Rt. 156 toward Hollister. The TRs then took to lonesome back roads for some high speed touring in the best Mille Miglia tradition. The route then circled back to Rt. 101 and then south and west for lunch at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley. After lunch, it was a short return for a restful afternoon at Casa Palmero and a dinner at the private residence of one of the owners.

The next day’s route went out Carmel Valley Road and up over Laureles Grade to Rt. 68 near Laguna Seca and then east to Jolon with a return on Rt. 101 for lunch at the magnificent Tehama Golf Club above Monterey. Dinner was held at another owner’s residence high above the Quail Lodge Resort.

On Thursday the Tour began its run south to Santa Barbara with a superb morning run down the coast on Rt. 1 with lunch at the Dolphin Bay Resort at Pismo Beach near Avila. The afternoon run into Santa Barbara gave a total for the day of 230 miles under a hot sun which left everyone ready for a relaxing dinner at the Belmond El Encanto hotel in the hills above Santa Barbara. The next day was a rest day for the TRs as their drivers and passengers had a private visit to the fabulous Mullin Automobile Museum in Oxnard which was having a special Bugatti exhibit. This new museum, dedicated to the finest of prewar French automobile design, should be on every enthusiast’s must visit list. Dinner was at the nearby residence of one of the participants.

The last day for the Tour offered a fascinating route all around the Los Padres National Forest to the lovely Ojai Valley Inn before returning to El Encanto for a final gala dinner. The 250 Testa Rossas all ran very well and gave their owners the truly unusual experience of driving their racing cars on the road together for more than 780 miles over four days. We can’t wait for the next Ferrari 250TR Tour!

    When the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa made its debut in 1957 at the Nurburgring 1000 km event
    I was in the pits watching Masten Gregory take the car out for practice, but could not understand why the factory would bother with a ” smaller” engined car when they had their normal 335 S cars of 4.1 liter capacity. Looking back it would seem Enzo Ferrari had the perception that the FIA would require a limit of 3 liters for the next years season, Their meeting in Paris was In October of 1957 during the time of the Paris automobile Salon
